Layered Lighting: A Practical Guide for Interior Architecture
Layered lighting is often explained as a shopping list.
Ambient light. Task light. Accent light. Decorative light.
Technically correct. Practically incomplete.
Because a successful layered lighting concept is not defined by how many types of luminaires are installed.
It is defined by how clearly different lighting responsibilities are separated.
And importantly: they do not all need to be equally present at the same time.
This distinction changes the entire planning process.
A pendant may provide task light and decorative identity at the same time. A wallwasher may create orientation while also making a room feel brighter. A recessed spotlight may illuminate artwork in one position and support a table in another.
The question is therefore not: Which luminaires do we need?
The better question is: which visual jobs must the lighting perform?

Vertical light
Makes walls, boundaries, materials and destinations visible and gives the room visual depth.
Task light
Places useful light exactly where reading, working, serving, preparing or navigating actually happens.
Accent light
Selects what deserves attention and prevents every element in the room from competing equally.
Decorative light
Adds visible objects, scale and identity without being asked to solve every functional requirement alone.
Scenes and control
Changes the importance of each layer as daylight, activity and the character of the room change.
Layered lighting starts with hierarchy.
Before placing luminaires, ask a deliberately simple question:
If most of the room were dark, which elements would still need to remain visible?
Perhaps it is the reception desk. A route towards the lift. A table. A material wall. A piece of art. A bar.
Those answers begin to establish the layers.
Without this hierarchy, layered lighting easily becomes additive: another downlight, another pendant, another LED line, another decorative fitting.
The room contains more light sources—but not necessarily more clarity.
The first layer is often called ambient or general lighting.
That description can be misleading.
It suggests that the first job is to fill the entire room with an even quantity of light.
In interior architecture, that is rarely necessary.
A good base layer creates enough visual continuity for the room to be understood.
It should allow people to move comfortably between brighter and darker zones without turning the complete ceiling into a repetitive grid.
At Coreum Hotel, this was particularly relevant because the open ground floor accommodates several functions at once. Lounge. Breakfast. Circulation. Bar. Informal meetings.
Treating that complete floor as one uniformly illuminated surface would expose its size rather than make it comfortable.
Instead, lighting helps break the larger volume into smaller visual territories.
This is one of the most useful practical principles in layered lighting.
We do not understand a room only through the light on the floor.
We read its walls. Its boundaries. Its objects. Its faces. Its openings.
Vertical light often makes a room appear brighter and more open because it places luminance directly within the field of view.
This means a space can feel visually generous without dramatically increasing the total amount of light.
Architectural lighting can therefore use walls, curtains, shelving, columns or material surfaces as part of the illumination itself.
Do not only illuminate the space between surfaces.
Illuminate the surfaces that explain the architecture.
Task lighting becomes much easier once the base layer is no longer expected to do everything.
A table needs light on the table. Reception needs light where people work and communicate. A bar counter needs clarity for staff and guests. A reading position needs useful light close to the actual task.
None of these automatically require the entire surrounding room to become brighter.
Local light can solve local requirements.
This has another advantage: the furniture plan begins to influence the lighting plan.
Instead of arranging luminaires according to an abstract ceiling geometry, the lighting responds to where people actually sit, stand, work and move.
Accent lighting is often described as the layer that highlights art, objects or architectural details.
That is true.
But its more important job is to establish relationships between brightness levels.
An accent only exists because something around it is less dominant.
If artwork, reception, tables, circulation, decorative luminaires, walls and ceiling are all emphasised equally, nothing remains an accent.
Layering therefore depends just as much on subtraction as addition.
At Coreum Hotel, the reception area demonstrates this principle at a larger scale. The reception needs to become recognisable within the open lobby while the double-height architecture also deserves presence.
The circular chandelier above the reception desk creates a focal element that draws the eye upward and gives the arrival area a recognisable centre.
A visible luminaire changes the interior even when it is switched off.
Its scale. Material. height. Shape. Position.
All become part of the interior architecture.
But decorative lighting becomes much stronger when the object also contributes to the spatial logic.
At Coreum Hotel, rounded fittings made from wood, glass and fabric form a deliberate contrast to the angular geometry, exposed concrete and natural stone of the building.
The decorative layer therefore does more than add warmth.
It mediates between the robust architecture and the human scale of the guest.
This is an important distinction.
Decorative luminaires should not be asked to compensate for missing task light, weak vertical illumination or poor spatial orientation.
They work best when the other layers already perform their responsibilities.
Layered lighting does not mean every lighting function must remain visually separate.
Quite the opposite.
Once the individual responsibilities are understood, one element can perform several of them at once.
The bar at Coreum Hotel is a particularly clear example.
Studio De Schutter developed a site-specific installation using black metal, glass, curved tracks and pendants positioned at three different heights.
It does several things simultaneously.
- focuses useful light on the bar counter
- supports the high table
- helps define the walkway
- gives the bar its own visual territory
- creates an identifiable object within the wider lobby
- opens the bar visually towards the surrounding space
Task lighting. Accent lighting. Spatial definition. Decorative identity.
Several layers. One coordinated gesture.
Layered lighting can easily produce a visually overloaded ceiling.
Downlights. Speakers. Sensors. Sprinklers. Ventilation. Tracks. Decorative pendants.
If every technical system demands equal visual presence, the ceiling becomes another competing layer.
At Coreum Hotel, lighting and acoustic ceiling elements were coordinated with the architects so that technical components could be integrated into a cleaner ceiling surface.
This allows the eye to remain lower in the space.
On furniture. Materials. People. The bar. The reception.
Sometimes the best lighting layer is the one that disappears.
This is where layered lighting becomes genuinely useful.
A room does not have one correct balance between ambient, task, accent and decorative light.
The correct balance changes.
At Coreum Hotel, the shared ground-floor spaces move between breakfast, lunch, quieter daytime periods, bar use and evening dining.
Scene-based controls and dim-to-warm light sources allow the same architecture to respond differently throughout the day.
During brighter daytime conditions, orientation and general visibility can carry more weight.
In the evening, lower decorative sources, local task light and selected accents can become more dominant while the background recedes.
The room does not simply become darker.
Its lighting composition changes.
This is where many otherwise sophisticated interiors lose their subtlety.
Every circuit is available. So every circuit is used.
The result is technically layered but visually flat.
A better scene may deliberately switch certain layers almost completely off.
Morning · Day · Evening · Late night
Morning may favour vertical and base illumination. Evening may shift emphasis towards tables and focal objects. Late-night conditions may reduce the background dramatically while retaining orientation.
The layers remain available.
Their importance changes.
Large lobbies and hospitality spaces make layered lighting easy to explain.
But the principle is equally relevant in compact interiors.
A small room does not need a miniature version of a large lighting plan.
It still needs a hierarchy.
What surface establishes brightness? Where does useful light belong? What material deserves emphasis? Which source can remain indirect? Which source should disappear?
In smaller spaces, every unnecessary luminaire becomes more noticeable.
Layering should therefore often lead to fewer visible lighting elements—not more.
For interior architects, the easiest way to avoid overlighting is to add layers in a deliberate order.
Decide which surfaces, destinations and activities must remain readable before selecting fixtures.
Create enough background and vertical light for the architecture to remain understandable.
Give tables, desks, counters and reading positions the light they actually require.
Choose a limited number of objects or surfaces that deserve stronger visual emphasis.
Use visible luminaires where they improve scale, materiality and the architectural character of the room.
Decide which layers dominate, recede or disappear during different activities and times of day.

- treating ambient lighting as a requirement for uniform brightness
- ignoring walls and other vertical surfaces
- asking decorative pendants to solve functional lighting requirements alone
- adding accent lighting to too many objects at once
- planning lighting independently from furniture positions
- creating multiple circuits but using them all at similar levels
- adding more luminaires whenever a room feels dark
- forgetting that reflected light can form its own layer
- allowing technical ceiling elements to dominate the interior
- using one lighting scene from morning until night
- treating darkness as something that needs to be eliminated
Layering should simplify the visual experience.
Not reveal the complexity required to create it.
Coreum Hotel in Stockstadt am Rhein is a 5,800-square-metre hospitality project with 129 rooms and junior suites across five floors.
Studio De Schutter developed the architectural lighting consultancy, bespoke luminaire development and scene setting from LPH 2–8.
The lighting concept balances exposed concrete and natural stone with warmer decorative elements, coordinates technical lighting with the ceiling architecture and uses localised light to create smaller zones within the open ground floor.
A bespoke bar installation, the circular reception chandelier, scene-based controls and dim-to-warm sources demonstrate that layering does not require isolated systems.
