What we stand for

Studio De Schutter consults architects and investors to achieve well-designed lighting schemes for spaces in which people love to be. The studio’s creative and tailor-made lighting solutions enhance the visual experience of space and our tech-savvy lighting know-how turns these into reality.

  • Sustainability and climate neutrality describe the fundamental principles of lighting design for Studio De Schutter.

Studio De Schutter’s expertise ranges from daylight optimization, to sustainable lighting focusing on circularity, and dark-sky-friendly lighting. With its dedication to sustainability, the studio creates comprehensive expert reports for the 1:1 reuse of existing luminaires, and the refurbishment and retrofitting of existing lighting systems. The studio also offers consultancy services on light pollution as well as on certifications like BREEAM, LEED, and WELL.

  • The lighting schemes we create are poetic in their form and technologically advanced in their functionality. We use continuous learning and constant curiosity as a driving force for innovation.

We believe in opportunity by looking further than the standard approaches. We challenge the status quo.

  • We are independent lighting designers because we believe in doing better. We advise in line with our client's needs and tastes. Being independent allows us to plan consciously and conscientiously where less is more. We also consult on a variety of projects for the circular economy, with a focus on reuse and sustainability.

  • We are thinkers and doers, balancing aesthetics with pragmatism in what we create. We are architects of light. We develop technical solutions with a sense of aesthetics – because as Don Norman says - “attractive things work better”

  • Every space, site, and project is different and unique. So why settle for generic lighting solutions? Our creative lighting proposals aim to shape experiences. We see lighting as an element that adds to or highlights the identity of a place.

  • Collaboration elevates design. A great collaboration between all stakeholders is visible in the final result of a project, in the details and the integration. Just like architectural lighting design is a collaboration between material, architectural form and light. They're inseparable. In the design process it shouldn't be any different. We don't just add fixtures to a space, we co-develop the visual experience together with the client and the architect.

Who we are

Studio De Schutter is a lighting design office based in Berlin and Antwerp that specializes in custom- made and immersive lighting solutions. The conviction that light has a decisive influence on the perception of space and well-being forms the basis for close cooperation with project developers, architects, and private clients. In addition to planning and designing individual lighting concepts, the studio also acts as a consultant. Sustainability and climate neutrality describe the fundamental principles of lighting design for Studio De Schutter.

At Studio De Schutter believe in design that loves to experiment. Our team designs out of curiosity and consults out of passion for technical know-how. We imagine new forms of light, shaping spaces and experiences.

What all our studio’s projects have in common is their holistic approach to lighting and design strategies. This means we don't just look at where light is needed for a task or function, but consider the overall visual perception and the interaction between space, material, user and vision.

Studio De Schutter’s work aim to shape experiences. As lighting designers, we see lighting as a tool for branding and an extension of the identity of a place, therefore our projects focus on corpitality (hospitality meets corporate identity). The studio’s vision is to go beyond pure lighting proposals by also taking materiality, ceiling design, user interaction, usability and sustainability into account.
