Scope: lighting concept, lighting planning, implementation and realization
The practice spaces are located in a listed freestandingbuilding. Working with the existing structure played a centralrole in the project: interventions in the building fabric werekept to a minimum to preserve its historic character andcarried out only where absolutely necessary. The lightingconcept follows the same approach: existing connectionswere largely reused, and track systems were discreetlyintegrated between the ceiling beams. Set against a white-on-white backdrop, the technical elements recede almostcompletely while offering maximum flexibility for a wide rangeof lighting scenes.
Medical practices often feel cold, functional, and impersonal. Here,however, the goal was to create the opposite: a practice that welcomespatients and allows them to feel at ease and relaxed. The lightingconcept follows this guiding principle — soft, inviting, and warm.The client wanted an atmosphere that combines professionalism andcare: a place where medicine and well-being are in balance. This wasachieved through the precise coordination of the color scheme, lighttones, materials, and lighting design.
A practice that should not feel like a typical medicaloffice, but rather warm, inviting, and feminine — this was the client’s brieffor the new Véo Health space in Berlin Mitte.
Here, sustainability means not only energy-efficient LED technology but also a resource-conscious approach toexisting structures — a principle that Studio De Schutterpursues in all its projects.
All luminaires follow a consistent designlanguage: white or transparent, round, and understated. These soft forms reinforce the feminine atmosphere of the practice and create a visual calm that benefits patients.At the same time, the lighting meets the highest quality standards: with a colorrendering index of 97, nearly perfect colorrendering is achieved. Skin tones appear natural, and colors are rendered accurately— a crucial factor for work in a holisticwomen’s health practice.The color temperature of 2700K was deliberately chosen: warmer than in typical practices or office environments and carefully tailored to the interior’s color and material palette. The result is a harmonious interplay of light, space, and materiality.
Reuse and sustainability
Some of the luminaires come from the client’s existing inventory. In every project, Studio De Schutter actively considers opportunities for reuse and seeks solutions that contribute to amore sustainable building culture. This reuse strategy is not only cost-effective but also a clear statement in favor of sustainable design. Combined with high-quality new luminaires from brands such as Occhio, mawa, Davide Groppi, Tom Dixon, SLV, and Lightnet, the result is a balanced composition of old and new — combining refined design with a grounded, approachable character. The treatment rooms are illuminated by surface-mounted Occhio spotlights, which not only fulfill functional requirements but also create visual accents. Artworks are carefully highlighted, allowing the practice to be experienced as an inspiring environment beyond its medical purpose. All lighting is dimmable — a detail that enables flexible lighting moods and responds to the varying needs of daily routines and different uses throughout the day.
The result is a practice that is more than a purely functional space: it is a place of care, trust, and well-being. Through the interaction of architecture, materials, and light, an atmosphere emerges that supports patients not only medically, but emotionally as well.
With its concept for Véo Health in Berlin Mitte, Studio De Schutter demonstrates how lighting design can transform spaces — from purely functional environments into sensory experiences. Soft forms, exceptional light quality, sustainable use of resources, and a clear design language make this project an example of contemporary and responsible lighting design.
Veo Health
Für die neue Véo Health Praxis in Berlin Mitte entwickelte Studio De Schutter ein Lichtkonzept, das medizinische Funktionalität mit einer warmen, ruhigen und einladenden Raumwirkung verbindet. Ziel war es bewusst nicht, eine klassische Arztpraxis zu schaffen, sondern einen Ort, der Vertrauen vermittelt und Patientinnen ein Gefühl von Ruhe, Sicherheit und Wohlbefinden gibt. Grundlage dafür ist das präzise Zusammenspiel von Licht, Materialität, Farben und Architektur.
Die Praxis befindet sich in einem denkmalgeschützten freistehenden Gebäude. Entsprechend spielte der sensible Umgang mit der bestehenden Struktur eine zentrale Rolle im gesamten Projekt. Eingriffe wurden auf das notwendige Minimum reduziert, bestehende Anschlüsse weitgehend weiterverwendet und Lichtschienen dezent zwischen den Deckenbalken integriert. Die technischen Elemente treten bewusst in den Hintergrund und ermöglichen gleichzeitig eine hohe Flexibilität für unterschiedliche Lichtszenen.
Licht übernimmt innerhalb der Praxis nicht nur funktionale Aufgaben, sondern unterstützt Orientierung, Wahrnehmung und Atmosphäre gleichermaßen. Bereits im Eingangsbereich entsteht durch sanfte Akzentuierung eine offene und ruhige Wirkung. Im Treppenbereich führen gezielt gesetzte Lichtpunkte intuitiv durch den Raum, während eine zwölf Meter lange indirekte Lichtlinie die Höhe des Gebäudes betont und die Erschließungsflächen weich ausleuchtet.
Alle eingesetzten Leuchten folgen einer reduzierten und klaren Gestaltungssprache. Runde, weiße oder transparente Formen schaffen visuelle Ruhe und unterstreichen die weiche, feminine Atmosphäre der Praxis. Gleichzeitig erfüllt das Licht höchste qualitative Anforderungen: Mit einem Farbwiedergabeindex von 97 werden Hauttöne und Materialien nahezu naturgetreu dargestellt – ein entscheidender Faktor in einer ganzheitlichen Gesundheitsumgebung. Die bewusst gewählte Lichtfarbe von 2700 Kelvin erzeugt eine deutlich wärmere Wirkung als typische Praxis oder Bürobeleuchtung und wurde präzise auf das Farb und Materialkonzept abgestimmt.
Auch Nachhaltigkeit wurde integraler Bestandteil des Projekts. Ein Teil der Leuchten stammt aus dem bestehenden Bestand der Bauherrschaft und wurde in das neue Konzept integriert. Ergänzt wird dies durch hochwertige neue Leuchten verschiedener Hersteller. So entsteht ein ausgewogenes Zusammenspiel aus Wiederverwendung, technischer Präzision und zeitloser Gestaltung. Alle Lichtlösungen sind dimmbar und lassen sich flexibel an unterschiedliche Situationen und Bedürfnisse im Alltag anpassen.
Das Ergebnis ist eine Praxis, die medizinische Anforderungen mit emotionaler Raumqualität verbindet. Licht wird hier nicht nur eingesetzt, um Räume sichtbar zu machen, sondern um Vertrauen, Ruhe und Identität entstehen zu lassen. Véo Health zeigt, wie Lichtplanung funktionale Gesundheitsräume in atmosphärische und menschliche Orte transformieren kann.
