Tonhain is located in the former cinema hall of the “Thorwaldsen Lichtspiele,” built in 1911/12 in Berlin-Steglitz. The culturally and historically significant space was converted by Tietz & Tietz – Architektur & Design into a compact chamber music hall and recording studio. The program includes rehearsals, concerts, masterclasses, and professional audio recordings for up to 99 people.
This use required a high level of acoustic quality, planned by the acoustic consultancy Krämer & Stegmaier, as well as a calm material palette and the precise integration of all technical systems. An organically shaped acoustic plaster ceiling with a topographic structure—consisting of a lowered “lake” and two raised “mountains”—plays a defining role both acoustically and spatially.
The solution demonstrates how lighting technology, architecture, acoustics, and ceiling design can be developed collaboratively and shape the brand identity of an innovative music studio.
The lighting remains visually restrained and supports the atmospheric quality of the space. The interplay of organic ceiling geometry, acoustic performance, and precisely integrated lighting technology creates a clear, uncluttered spatial impression with high functional flexibility—for professional recordings as well as for atmospheric concerts.

The lighting solution consists of more than 100 meters of flexible RGB LED strips and 21 frameless, motorized downlights integrated into the acoustic ceiling.
Due to the curved, custom geometries, embedding the lighting into the acoustic plaster was technically demanding. All profiles, feed-in points, and cable routing below the sound insulation layer were coordinated jointly with the architects, acoustic planners, executing companies, and the lighting design team at Studio De Schutter.
A 1:1 mock-up was used to test light effect, integration, and maintenance in advance, making the lighting design an integral part of the ceiling design.
The frameless, DMX-controlled, motorized luminaires with adjustable color temperature (2,700–6,000 K) enable different lighting scenes for concerts, recordings, and rehearsals.

TONHAIN - Lichtintegration in akustischer Deckentopografie durch Studio De Schutter Tonhain befindet sich im ehemaligen Kinosaal der 1911/12 erbauten „ThorwaldsenLichtspiele“ in Berlin-Steglitz. Der kulturhistorisch geprägte Raum wurde von Tietz & Tietz – Architektur & Design – zu einem kompakten Kammermusiksaal und Recording-Studio umgebaut. Das Programm umfasst Proben, Konzerte, Masterclasses und professionelle Audioaufnahmen für bis zu 99 Personen. Diese Nutzung erforderte ein hohes Maß an akustischer Qualität, die vom Akustikbüro Krämer & Stegmaier geplant wurde, sowie eine ruhige Materialität und die präzise Integration aller technischen Systeme. Eine organisch geformte Akustikputzdecke mit topografischer Struktur – bestehend aus einem abgesenkten „See“ und zwei erhöhten „Bergen“ – wirkt dabei sowohl klanglich als auch räumlich prägend.
Die Anforderungen an Akustik und technische Reduktion bildeten den Rahmen für das Lichtkonzept und die Lichtplanung. Die Lichtlösung besteht aus über 100 m flexiblen RGB-LED-Bändern sowie 21 rahmenlosen, motorisierten Downlights, integriert in diese Akustikdecke. Aufgrund der gekrümmten Sonderformen war die Einbettung der Beleuchtung in den Akustikputz technisch anspruchsvoll: Alle Profile, Einspeisepunkte und die Kabelführung unterhalb der Schallschutzebene wurden gemeinsam mit Architektur, Akustikplanung, den ausführenden Firmen und dem Lichtplanungsteam von Studio De Schutter abgestimmt. Ein 1:1-Mockup diente dazu, Lichtwirkung, Integration und Wartung vorab zu überprüfen. Die Lichtplanung wurde damit zu einem integralen Teil der Deckengestaltung.
Die rahmenlosen, DMX-gesteuerten, motorisierten Strahler mit einstellbarer Lichtfarbe (2.700–6.000 K) ermöglichen unterschiedliche Lichtszenen für Konzert, Aufnahme und Probe. Ihre Ausrichtung wird automatisch an drei Bühnenpositionen und mehrere Klavierstandorte angepasst. Das System reduziert die Anzahl notwendiger Leuchten und minimiert Eingriffe in die Akustikfläche, was ressourceneffizient ist. Die Beleuchtung bleibt visuell zurückhaltend und unterstützt die atmosphärische Wirkung des Raums. Das Zusammenspiel aus organischer Deckengeometrie, akustischer Wirksamkeit und präzise integrierter Lichttechnik schafft eine klare, aufgeräumte Raumwirkung mit hoher funktionaler Flexibilität für professionelle Aufnahmen ebenso wie für atmosphärische Konzerte. Die Lösung zeigt, wie Lichttechnik, Architektur, Akustik und Deckengestaltung kollaborativ entwickelt werden können und die Markenidentität eines innovativen Musikstudios prägen.
