"Staubfrei gedacht" featured by LICHT

Studio De Schutter is featured in LICHT Magazine 5/2026 with its lighting concept for the Coreum Hotel in Stockstadt am Rhein. The article, "Staubfrei gedacht" ("Designed for Dust"), explores how lighting design can transform highly specific technical requirements into an integral part of the architectural concept. The project focuses on sustainability, long-term maintainability, and a lighting strategy that seamlessly connects architecture, function, and guest experience.

Developed together with Atelier 522, the hotel is located on the Coreum Campus, a unique European center for innovation and training in the construction and recycling industries. Its location introduced an unusual design challenge: luminaires needed to minimize horizontal surfaces to reduce dust accumulation. This practical requirement became a defining element of the overall lighting concept.

Studio De Schutter created a holistic lighting strategy combining energy-efficient LED technology, replaceable light sources, intelligent lighting scenes, and a seamless integration of technical lighting into the architecture. Bespoke lighting installations in the reception and bar areas create distinctive focal points, while carefully designed lighting islands structure the open-plan spaces and support different functions throughout the hotel.

Sustainability played a central role throughout the project. Dim-to-Warm technology, serviceable luminaires, and warm outdoor lighting designed to reduce light pollution contribute to a solution that balances environmental responsibility with architectural quality. At the same time, carefully coordinated transitions between daylight and artificial lighting create a comfortable atmosphere throughout the day.

The feature also provides insights into the collaborative design process, highlighting how close cooperation between the client, architects, and lighting designers resulted in a project that successfully balances technical performance with architectural ambition. The outcome is a lighting concept that brings clarity, comfort, and identity to the hotel—even under extraordinary conditions.
