Circular Lighting Design at Impact Hub Berlin

On arcguide, Studio De Schutter is featured with the project Impact Hub Berlin, highlighting a forward-thinking lighting concept rooted in circular design principles. The article explores how sustainable strategies such as reuse, upcycling, and resource-conscious planning can shape not only the technical performance of lighting, but also the architectural identity of a space.

Within the project, Studio De Schutter developed a holistic lighting approach for the CRCLR House that aligns with principles like Cradle to Cradle and reflects the mindset of the building’s users. The careful coordination of daylight and artificial lighting influenced key design decisions, including material selection and interior color concepts. The result is a working environment that feels open, adaptable, and atmospherically balanced.

A central aspect of the concept lies in its unconventional planning process. Instead of relying on standard product catalogues, the team sourced reused luminaires, surplus materials, and sustainable components from various channels. These elements were transformed into tailored lighting solutions, including custom-built fixtures assembled from standard parts. This approach not only reduced resource consumption but also introduced a new level of design flexibility.

A defining statement of the project emphasizes that sustainability in lighting design goes beyond efficiency metrics. It requires a shift in mindset toward circular systems, long-term usability, and creative reuse. The integration of daylight studies, adaptive control systems, and reconfigured luminaires demonstrates how technical precision and environmental responsibility can work hand in hand.

By contributing this project, Studio De Schutter reinforces its position as a lighting design practice that actively rethinks how spaces are illuminated — combining sustainability, architectural clarity, and user-centered experience.

Sabine De Schutter

Founded in Berlin in 2015 by Belgian born Sabine De Schutter, Studio De Schutter reflects the strong belief that architectural lighting design is much more than just lighting up the built environment.

As independent lighting designers, the studio's focus is on user-centred design, because design is about creating meaningful spaces that positively affect people's lives. Studio De Schutter work focuses on creative lighting for working spaces, custom fixtures for heritage buildings to workshops and installations for public space. The studio's motto = #creativityisourcurrency

Sabine teaches at the HPI d.school, Hochschule Wismar, is an IALD member and the ambassador for Women in Lightingin Germany.
