Architectural Lighting: Highlights from a Decade (2015–2025)

Studio De Schutter turns ten — a decade in which we have continued to evolve architectural lighting as a fusion of atmospheric design, technical precision and sustainable planning.

For us, architectural lighting means the artistic and functional staging of buildings and interior spaces through light: it makes forms legible, creates atmosphere, supports orientation and expresses the identity of a place.

Since 2015, we have been realising lighting concepts in Berlin that strengthen spaces, enable clear perception and make sustainable design tangible. As part of this anniversary, we look back at selected highlights from our projects of recent years.

Awards & Nominations

Over the past ten years, many of our works have been recognised with awards. This is complemented by international features, talks and workshops that highlight our approach to sustainable and circular lighting design.

Project examples from our architectural lighting work

Impact Hub Berlin (at CRCLR House) (Berlin-Neukölln)

This project is a prime example of our philosophy of circular planning and sustainable lighting design: around 70% of all materials used are recycled or up-cycled. In a former warehouse on the Kindl site, a coworking space was created with an open atmosphere, an impressive gallery and a modular lighting solution that unifies architecture, materiality and the effect of light.

Le Big Tam Tam (Hamburg)

Across roughly 2,000 m² in Hamburg’s Hanseviertel, we developed a holistic lighting concept for a food market with bar and stage: flexible scene control, custom luminaires and differentiated lighting moods for day and night. A particular focus was the large central bar beneath the dome, plant areas with integrated lighting and an adaptive lighting system that meets heritage protection requirements.

Centrum Judaicum (Berlin)

For the former house of worship and cultural centre in the heart of Berlin, we developed a lighting solution in 2019 across approx. 2,500 m² that combines LED technology, heritage considerations and spatial staging. The goal was, among other things, to make the architecture perceptible, illuminate historical details and simultaneously create a flexible exhibition environment.

Team, Collaborations & Partnerships

Above all, we are grateful. None of this would have been possible without a team that works together with heart, clarity and endless patience. Without partners who placed their trust in us. Without people who shared their spaces and visions with us.

Over the past ten years, we have had the privilege of meeting many wonderful people and developing projects that have shaped us. We are truly excited for the next decade — for the spaces we are already planning today, for the places that will soon become visible, and for collaborations that inspire.

Thank you to everyone ✨

Light shapes spaces — and every project begins with a conversation. If you are planning a project, have questions about lighting design or would like to explore new approaches in architectural lighting together, we would be delighted to connect. Studio De Schutter stands for precise planning, a clear design ethos and lighting that makes atmosphere visible.
