Workspace as an Experience
The new SoundCloud office was designed as more than a workplace.
It was conceived as a flexible environment that adapts to different personalities, working styles, moods, and sensory needs throughout the day.
Studio De Schutter developed a lighting concept that combines workplace functionality with hospitality inspired comfort. The result is an office that feels less like a corporate environment and more like a series of carefully curated experiences.
The concept focuses on diffuse, even illumination without classic downlights. Instead of creating isolated pools of light, the lighting softly shapes entire spaces, reduces glare, and supports visual comfort throughout the office.
The lighting concept was developed around the understanding that light perception is highly individual. Especially in contemporary workplaces, one lighting atmosphere cannot satisfy every user equally.
Studio De Schutter therefore integrated personalized lighting controls directly into the workspace. Using a Casambi Bluetooth control system, employees can adjust lighting locally at their desks according to their own preferences and tasks.
Height adjustable desks, varying brightness levels, and differentiated room atmospheres support a more neuroinclusive working environment. The lighting adapts to people, not the other way around.
Reuse as Design Strategy
Sustainability played a central role throughout the project.
Rather than replacing all luminaires with new products, Studio De Schutter carefully analyzed the existing lighting fixtures from SoundCloud’s former office and refurbished them for reuse in the new space.
The fixtures were upgraded technically and integrated into a completely new lighting scheme with modern DALI based controls replacing outdated phase dimming systems.
Additional decorative luminaires were sourced locally through the secondhand market. Vintage fixtures were intentionally combined with technical lighting to create spaces that feel layered, warm, and character driven rather than purely functional.
This combination of refurbished office luminaires and locally sourced vintage lighting creates a visual language that merges workplace and hospitality. Meeting rooms become atmospheric spaces with their own identities instead of anonymous corporate interiors.
From café lounge to listening room, from collaborative zones to quiet retreats — each space was designed with its own identity. Together they create a workplace that feels less like an office and more like a collection of experiences.
A Holistic Approach to Workplace Lighting
Studio De Schutter approaches lighting from the perspective of perception first.
Rather than beginning with luminaires, the design process starts with mood, rhythm, functionality, and the experience of space.
For SoundCloud, this meant creating an environment that responds to different users, different activities, and different sensory needs throughout the day. The office was intentionally designed as a collection of distinct identities rather than one uniform workplace. Brighter areas support collaboration and exchange, while quieter spaces, lounges, and retreat zones create room for concentration and individual comfort.
Lighting plays a key role in connecting these different experiences. Diffuse and even illumination without downlights creates visually calm environments and comfortable working conditions. Local control through Casambi allows users to adapt lighting individually at their desks, supporting flexibility and a more personalized workplace experience.
At the same time, sustainability became part of the design strategy. Existing luminaires from the former office were analysed, refurbished, and integrated into the new concept, while vintage fixtures sourced locally add character and support the hospitality inspired atmosphere.
Each room follows its own rhythm. From collaborative spaces to calmer lounges, the lighting adapts to different activities and sensory preferences throughout the workplace.
SoundCloud: Workplace Lighting Between Flexibility, Hospitality and Reuse
Das neue SoundCloud Büro wurde als mehr als nur ein Arbeitsplatz konzipiert. Ziel war es, eine flexible Umgebung zu schaffen, die auf unterschiedliche Persönlichkeiten, Arbeitsweisen, Stimmungen und sensorische Bedürfnisse im Tagesverlauf reagieren kann.
Studio De Schutter entwickelte dafür ein Lichtkonzept, das klassische Arbeitsplatzanforderungen mit der Aufenthaltsqualität aus dem Hospitality Bereich verbindet. Entstanden ist ein Büro, das weniger wie eine klassische Arbeitsumgebung wirkt und stärker als Abfolge unterschiedlicher Raumerlebnisse verstanden werden kann.
Das Konzept setzt auf diffuse und gleichmäßige Beleuchtung ohne klassische Downlights. Anstelle einzelner Lichtinseln formt das Licht ganze Räume, reduziert Blendung und unterstützt visuell ruhige und angenehme Arbeitsbedingungen.
Unterschiedliche Raumtypen erfüllen dabei unterschiedliche Aufgaben. Helle Bereiche fördern Zusammenarbeit und Austausch, während ruhigere Zonen, Lounges und Rückzugsbereiche Raum für Konzentration und individuelle Bedürfnisse schaffen. Jeder Bereich erhielt bewusst eine eigene Identität.
Im Zentrum des Projekts steht die Idee, dass Lichtwahrnehmung individuell ist. Gerade in modernen Arbeitsumgebungen kann eine einzige Lichtstimmung nicht allen Nutzerinnen und Nutzern gleichermaßen gerecht werden.
Deshalb integrierte Studio De Schutter personalisierte Steuerungsmöglichkeiten direkt in den Arbeitsplatz. Über ein Casambi Bluetooth System können Mitarbeitende die Beleuchtung lokal an ihren Arbeitsplätzen individuell anpassen und auf persönliche Vorlieben oder Aufgaben abstimmen.
Höhenverstellbare Tische, unterschiedliche Helligkeitsniveaus und verschiedene Raumcharaktere unterstützen zusätzlich ein neuroinklusives Arbeitsumfeld. Das Licht passt sich den Menschen an und nicht umgekehrt.
Nachhaltigkeit spielte gleichzeitig eine zentrale Rolle im Projekt. Bestehende Leuchten aus dem früheren SoundCloud Büro wurden analysiert, aufgearbeitet und in das neue Lichtkonzept integriert. Die technischen Komponenten wurden überarbeitet und in ein neues System eingebunden.
Ergänzend dazu kamen dekorative Leuchten aus dem lokalen Secondhand Markt zum Einsatz. Vintage Elemente wurden bewusst mit technischer Beleuchtung kombiniert, um Räume zu schaffen, die Wärme, Charakter und Aufenthaltsqualität vermitteln.
Die Kombination aus aufgearbeiteten Bestandsleuchten und lokal beschaffter dekorativer Beleuchtung verbindet Arbeitsplatz und Hospitality Ansatz. Besprechungsräume und Gemeinschaftsflächen erhalten dadurch individuelle Identitäten und wirken weniger wie klassische Unternehmensräume.
Studio De Schutter betrachtet Lichtplanung grundsätzlich aus der Perspektive der Raumwahrnehmung. Der Prozess beginnt nicht bei der Leuchte selbst, sondern bei Nutzung, Stimmung, Rhythmus und der räumlichen Erfahrung.
Für SoundCloud bedeutete das die Entwicklung einer Arbeitswelt, die auf unterschiedliche Menschen, unterschiedliche Tätigkeiten und unterschiedliche Bedürfnisse reagiert. Licht wird dabei zum verbindenden Element zwischen Funktion, Individualität und Nachhaltigkeit.
Das Ergebnis ist ein Lichtkonzept, das Wiederverwendung, Flexibilität und technische Präzision mit einer klaren räumlichen Identität verbindet und eine Arbeitsumgebung schafft, die Konzentration, Kreativität, Austausch und Aufenthaltsqualität gleichermaßen unterstützt.
