From a 1970s care home to a climate-ready hotel
Transforming existing architecture instead of replacing it: the new MAGDAS Hotel Vienna Prater shows how a former 1970s care home can be given a completely new future. The building is being carefully refurbished and upgraded to a modern 3*+ hotel standard, combining the preservation of the existing structure with circular materials and innovative building technology. Once completed, the hotel will offer 103 rooms, four seminar spaces and a restaurant with a garden open to the wider public.

The transformation goes far beyond a visual renovation. A thermally upgraded building envelope, new timber-aluminium windows and the complete phase-out of fossil fuels are expected to save around 372 tonnes of CO₂ per year in operation. Re-use also plays a central role in the interior, where existing and reclaimed materials are given a second life. Together, these measures turn the former care home into a more sustainable, accessible and welcoming place designed for the future.
The transformation is currently underway, with the opening of the new MAGDAS Hotel Vienna Prater planned for spring 2027.
