Light Art at Berlin Art Week

When Berlin Art Week transforms the city into a meeting point for contemporary art, Berlin shines in a special light. For a few days in September, the city itself becomes a stage: museums, galleries, project spaces, and off-spaces open their doors, and international artists meet the local scene. The art form that repeatedly takes center stage is light art.

Because light art is more than technology or illumination. It speaks a universal language that requires no words yet evokes emotions, memories, and moods. Light transforms spaces, defines atmosphere, and invites us to see the city with new eyes.

The Role of Light Art at Berlin Art Week
This year, installations such as Light & Shadow at the Berlinische Galerie or soft cycles by Daniel Hölzl demonstrate how intensely light influences perception. Whether through subtle shadow play or powerful, immersive spaces, light art is always an invitation to reflect. It urges us to look beyond the obvious and to redefine the relationship between people, space, and light.

Especially in a city like Berlin, shaped by ruptures, contrasts, and transitions, light art unfolds its full impact. It translates cultural questions into visual experiences, creating places of encounter and moments of irritation at the same time.

Our Projects: Perception as Experience
At Studio De Schutter, we also understand light art as a dialogue between people and space. We would like to present some of our works in this context:

  • Your Point of View (YPOV)
An installation based on the principles of Gestalt psychology. Monochrome LED lines form circles, triangles, and squares. Depending on the viewing angle, these shift into ever-new patterns. Perception here becomes an active process – and the change of perspective itself turns into an artistic experience.

  • MELO
This project explores the poetic dimension of light. Through rhythmic sequences, colors, and transitions, it creates an atmosphere that carries both calm and movement. MELO shows how light can become an emotional bridge between space and viewer.

Berlin as an Epicenter of Light Art
Every year, Berlin Art Week demonstrates anew how diverse and powerful light art can be. It connects art with architecture, opens public spaces for new experiences, and shows how atmospheres can be transformed through the interplay of brightness, darkness, and color.

For us as lighting designers, Berlin Art Week is a source of inspiration. It reminds us that light is not only a functional tool but also a cultural medium that creates identity and brings people together.

“Every installation is an invitation to change your perspective.” – Sabine De Schutter

Studio De Schutter work focuses on creative lighting for working spaces, custom fixtures for heritage buildings to workshops and installations for public space. The studio's motto = #creativityisourcurrency

Sabine teaches at the HPI d.school, Hochschule Wismar, is an IALD member and the ambassador for Women in Lightingin Germany.
