Backlight

B

Backlight or backlighting is a method of creative lighting where the light source is behind the object.

There are two main cases:

  • the illuminated object is a translucent panel that becomes an emitting surface

  • the illuminated object is opaque and the outlines of the objects standing in front of it are emphasised

Tip from a lighting designer

As lighting designers we use the method of backlighting for decorative purposes, where we want to add character to elements such as a counter or feature wall. In this context a lighting designer works closely with the architect or interior designer to select the appropriate materials and the technical integration of the lighting.
