Designing perception
We don't always plan according to the rules or norms. And we don't have to if the quality of the project is better than the guidelines.
As lighting consultants, we often get asked to redo or analyse the lighting in an existing project that doesn't work. Often the lighting schemes follow somewhat blindly the rules in terms of measured brightness on a horizontal level, and show anti-glare values on datasheets but don't look at the implemented situation. Like this, a project is based on quantitative and not on qualitative parameters.
At our studio, we take a holistic approach to lighting. We look at all aspects of perception that might contribute to or reduce the quality of a space. We consult on material and reflection values, advice on daylight openings, and think about perspectives and viewpoints, just to name a few. Hence, we design perception and visual comfort!
Getting a comfortable and beautiful lighting scheme is much more important than reaching some norms. And if the lighting is done well, nobody will ask what the lux-values are...
At our studio, we believe that:
"all rules can be broken, if the project is better than the rules."
