Conference lighting

Lighting for conference settings needs to comply with the norms for workplace lighting, namely the DIN 12464 and the ASR. As the way we work has changed over the past few years, so have the requirements for workplaces and workplace lighting.

Tip from a lighting designer

Besides taking the norms into consideration when designing lighting for meeting and conference spaces, we also take the user needs into account. Video conferencing has become widely spread and the lighting needs to be adapted to this need. This means that lighting for video conferencing should be flicker-free to avoid lines on the video. Further, the lighting should not just illuminate the table, and working area, as the norms describe, also the faces of the participants should be shadow free and evenly illuminated. Good conference lighting is a matter of finding a balance between reduced glare, well-illuminated faces and the appropriate lighting intensity.

Especially with video conference lighting, the light distribution and uniformity need to be taken into account. If not all faces of the conference participants are illuminated equally in terms of brightness and uniformity, a visual hierarchy might be communicated on the video.

As cameras are less sensitive than the human eye, too big of a contrast might render a dark or overly bright image.
