In regions with long periods of darkness, we should take on the challenge to create an active and vibrant urban life after dark. Streets, squares and parks, often turn into scary, dead and dark forgotten places at night.

The spirit of such public spaces can be greatly enhanced when they are just given the appropriate lighting. This often invites citizens of a city, town or village to come together, socialise and enjoy their public space.

The city of Tartu in Estonia, was lacking these kinds of pleasant, well lit outdoor areas and therefore commissioned us to create a light event. The event was aimed at investigating the city’s nightscape and creating prototypes of possible improvements. This is how the festival Tartu Valgus, Tartu in Light or short TAVA came to be.

Looking at the various impacts culture, the environment, society and economics could have on the nocturnal landscape, we developed temporary lighting installations that rediscovered the spirit of Tartu.

It is important to know that light does not just enable us to see, it generates the identity of a city, and often gives them their distinct look and feel. The aim of the festival was to explore the impact of light in an artistic and architectural way. In doing so, participants and visitors were given the opportunity to discover and experience the effects of light not only in a tangible way, but also on a psychical level.

Organisation Team: E. Liiv, E. Pruul, S. De Schutter, T. Rander, E. Kiivet, K. Bachmann,  J. Taam and Ü. Reinsalu.
