2015 was the year that the well-known German Renaissance painter, Lucas Cranach, was commemorated through various events. Kronach Leuchtet, or Kronach in Lights was one of them. Lucas Cranach had a special bound with this place. He lived for a long time in the town, Kronach, which was also named after him.

When creating the concept for our light installa- tion that was running from Martinsplatz, through Amtsgerichtstrasse and ending in a video projection at Melchior-Otto square, we wondered, if Lucas Cranach would live today, how would his art be? How would Kronach inspire him? As his art highlighted the beauty of nature, we also wanted to emphasize this in our lighting installations through a play of light and shadow.

We created white frames on several locations along the installation, which placed small scenes in the focus. These framed scenes would become well-photographed locations and shared by visitors through different social media platforms. In this way, connecting Lucas Kranachs’ Renaissance art with the contemporary use of social media and indirectly bringing him to the present.
